Rotary Notation

“Rotary notation” is a new form of music notation created using a systematic rule set. The pieces you see here were generated from traditional piano sheet music. Each form’s title refers to the composer, the piece, and the measure numbers from which the data were derived. The outermost paths (ignoring the unchanging outer circle present in all four pieces) represent the treble clef note intervals, while the inner paths represent the movements of the bass notes. The center symbol refers to the original musical key of the piece, and the circled points along the paths indicate flats/sharps/accidentals. The figure is “read” by starting at 0 degrees and traveling counter-clockwise. The closed circular form imposes a limitation on the amount of musical information that can be used and results in a looped phrase.

About These Pieces
